Solid Color or Flake Underneath, Polyaspartic on Top

On many of our floors the customer never hears the word polyaspartic, and it is still the layer doing most of the work. A solid color body coat or a broadcast flake coat gives the floor its look and its thickness. The polyaspartic clear on top is what tires roll across, what the pressure washer hits, and what gets scraped when a jack stand drags. Choosing that top layer well is how a good-looking floor stays good-looking.

Over flake, the clear fills the gaps between chips and levels the rough broadcast into a sealed surface you can mop. Over a solid color like the tan floor pictured above, it deepens the gloss and adds protection a pigmented coat lacks on its own. Either way, we can mix slip-resistant aggregate into the clear for bays that see water, fuel or hydraulic drips.

Some jobs call for polyaspartic from the primer up, where speed or chemical exposure justifies it. Others do fine with an epoxy base and a polyaspartic clear. The written scope of work names every layer, so you know exactly what is going down. Trench Drains, Wash Water and the Edges That Fail First

A floor that gets washed down fails at its edges long before its middle. Water finds the lip where coating meets a trench drain frame, the joint where slab meets wall, and every crack that was skimmed over and never repaired. Once water gets beneath the film at one of those spots, it lifts the coating from below, and the peeling spreads outward from there.

So the detail work around drains decides whether a wash bay floor holds. We grind right up to the drain frame, key the coating into a saw-cut edge so it has something to lock against, and carry it down into the channel where the drain design allows. At the walls, a cove base turns the coating up so wash water meets a sealed curve at the corner. Joints get filled and cut clean before any color goes down.

Does polyaspartic hold up to pressure washing?

Yes, once it has cured. The film resists water, soaps and most shop chemicals, which is why we use it in wash bays. What matters most is detailing the drains, joints and wall edges well, because water that works under the coating at an edge is what starts peeling.

Will it turn yellow near the bay door?

No. Polyaspartic is UV stable, so the part of the floor that takes direct afternoon sun keeps the same color as the shaded back of the bay. Epoxy used as the final coat is the layer that ambers in sunlight, which is why we top sun-exposed floors with polyaspartic.

Is the floor slippery when it is wet?

A smooth gloss finish can be slick with water, oil or hydraulic fluid on it. For shops and wash bays we add a slip-resistant aggregate to the clear coat. You choose how much texture you want, and we show you samples of the options before the job starts.

What do we need to move before you start?

Clear the whole floor: vehicles, rolling tool chests, shelving, parts and anything stored against the walls. Equipment bolted down we can work around once we have seen it. Having the room empty when the crew arrives keeps the job on its planned schedule from the first hour.

Can you coat over a floor that is already peeling?

Not over the failing part. Loose or delaminated coating has to come off, because new material only bonds as well as whatever is underneath it. We grind the old coating back to sound concrete or a well-bonded layer, check the slab for moisture, and then build the new system from there.
