Coating a San Angelo Patio That Bakes All Summer

Quick Answer

An outdoor slab is a completely different job from a garage floor. Sun is the thing that kills exterior coatings, so the topcoat has to be UV stable, which rules out a standard epoxy on top. We build patios with a polyaspartic or acrylic system, broadcast texture into it so wet feet have grip, lean toward lighter color blends because they run cooler underfoot, and honor every expansion joint in the slab. And if a slab holds water or has started to heave, we tell you to fix that first.

The pitch is usually the same: the slab off the back of the house is stained, chalky, hot enough to hurt, and the homeowner wants to know whether a coating fixes it. Usually the answer is yes. Sometimes the honest answer is not yet. Here is how we tell the difference.

What The Sun Actually Does Out There

Bare concrete outdoors goes through two things at once. Ultraviolet light breaks down the surface paste, which is why an old patio feels sandy and leaves a dusty film on your hand. At the same time the slab drinks up every spill, every bit of grill grease, every mineral-heavy sprinkler cycle, and holds it, because bare concrete is porous. The gray gets blotchy, the surface gets rough, and no amount of pressure washing brings it back, because the material that made it smooth is gone.

Coated concrete fails differently, and this is where most bad outdoor jobs come from. Standard epoxy is not UV stable. Put it in direct sun and it does two ugly things. It ambers, meaning a clear or light-gray finish shifts yellow and then a dull tan, worst in the spots that catch the most light, so the fade is uneven and looks like a stain. Then it chalks: the resin at the very surface degrades into a fine powder, gloss dies, and the finish goes flat and cloudy. On a West Texas patio you can watch that happen in a couple of seasons. It is not a bad install, it is the wrong chemistry in the wrong place.

Heat is the third factor and the one people feel first. Dark concrete under a full afternoon sun gets far hotter than the air around it, easily well past the point where you pull your foot back. That is a real design input, not a footnote, on any surface people cross barefoot.

Why We Use UV-Stable Systems Outside

Polyaspartic is what solves the ambering problem. It is UV stable by chemistry, so it holds its color and its gloss in direct sun instead of yellowing out of it. It is also flexible enough to take the daily expansion and contraction a bare-sky slab goes through, and it cures fast, which matters when your working window is early morning before the deck gets too hot to coat. Texture That Grips Without Shredding Your Feet

Every outdoor coating needs slip resistance, because sun-baked concrete plus a summer downpour plus a wet dog is a fall waiting to happen. The mistake is going too far. A heavy aggregate broadcast sized for a warehouse aisle turns into a cheese grater the moment someone walks it barefoot or a kid slides across it, and you cannot un-rough a floor without grinding it back off.

So we scale the texture to the traffic. Around a pool or on a patio people cross in bare feet, we use a fine aggregate broadcast, held to a light, even coverage and locked under the topcoat. The result reads slightly grippy rather than sharp. Wet, it holds a foot. Dry, you can lie on it. Under a covered porch that never really gets rain, we can dial the texture back further. On steps, on the transition from the house, and on any slope toward a drain, we go heavier, because those are the spots people actually slip on. That is three different textures on one job sometimes, which is fine, because it is one crew and one afternoon.

Color, Heat, And The Barefoot Test

Darker blends look sharp and run hotter. Lighter blends reflect more of that August sun, and on a pool deck or a barefoot path that difference is the one your feet vote on. We bring sample boards, set them in the sun, and let you touch them before you choose.

Joints, Cracks, And Slabs That Move

Exterior slabs move more than interior ones, because they take the full temperature swing with nothing insulating them. That movement has to go somewhere. Control joints are where the slab is supposed to crack, and we honor them: we clean them out, coat through them properly, and re-cut or fill them so they stay a joint. Coating flat over a control joint like it is not there just relocates the crack to a random line across the middle of your patio.

Hairline cracks that are stable get chased out and filled with polyurea before we prime, and once the color and texture go over them, they disappear. What we do not do is bury a crack that is still working. If the two sides sit at different heights, if the gap is widening season to season, or if there is a wide separation where the patio meets the house, that is structural movement, and a coating over it will simply tear along the same line. Living With It, And When We Say No

The other half of doing this honestly is knowing when not to. Two conditions get a no from us. The first is a slab that holds water: if there is a low spot where a puddle sits for a day after rain, the drainage is wrong, and water trapped against any coating is a problem no chemistry solves. That gets addressed first. The second is a slab that is heaving or settling, which shows up as one section sitting proud of its neighbor or a joint that has opened wide. That slab is moving, and a coating is not a repair. We would rather walk a job than take money for a floor we know is going to fail, and we will tell you exactly what we saw when we looked. Will a coated patio be too hot to walk on barefoot?

It depends mostly on color. Lighter blends reflect more sun and run noticeably cooler than dark ones, so tans and warm grays are what we steer people toward for barefoot areas. Any surface in full afternoon sun in August will be warm, coated or not. Shade and color are the two levers.

What about the cracks and joints in my patio?

Stable hairline cracks get cleaned out, filled with polyurea, and disappear under the finish. Control joints stay joints, because that is where the slab is meant to move. What we will not do is coat over an actively moving crack, since the coating just tears along the same line.

Are there patios you will not coat?

Yes. If a slab holds standing water after rain, the drainage has to be corrected first. If it is heaving or settling, with one section sitting higher than the next, that is structural and a coating is not a repair. We would rather tell you that up front than take the job.
