A Floor for the Bay That Cannot Sit Empty
A shop or garage that cannot go dark for a week is the case polyaspartic was made for: one mobilization, one crew, every coat in a single visit. What you are buying alongside the schedule is sun stability and hot-tire durability. What it costs you is a short working window, which is a crew problem rather than a chemistry problem, and on a closed garage that never sees sun it can be the wrong purchase entirely.
The question we get from Andrews shops is never really about chemistry. It is about how many days the lift sits idle. A mechanical bay that parks for most of a week is a bay not writing tickets, and a household with one garage has nowhere to put the truck meanwhile. Here is what a single-visit floor actually delivers, what it demands from the crew laying it, and when a plain epoxy build is the smarter buy. One Trailer, One Crew, One Arrival
The advantage is compression. Because the material recoats in roughly ninety minutes instead of overnight, a crew can grind, patch, prime, broadcast and clear the same slab between sunrise and supper. On a straight epoxy build every coat is an overnight wait, which stretches a modest garage across most of a week and turns a working shop floor into a real closure.
Held to one day, the whole job becomes a single mobilization. One trailer, one crew, one arrival on the 35-mile run up from our Odessa shop. Nobody is opening your gate or your bay on three consecutive mornings, and nobody is coordinating three separate windows around whoever has keys.
The dates on the other side are honest ones. Foot traffic is fine that evening. Vehicles roll back on around the third day, while the film finishes hardening the whole way through. The install is what happens in a day, and the cure keeps its normal window regardless. Anyone telling you a fresh floor is ready for a loaded truck the moment the trailer pulls out is selling you the failure you were trying to avoid.
Cold Slabs and Hot Slabs Are Two Different Jobs
Slab temperature drives this material more than air temperature does, and Andrews delivers both extremes inside the same calendar. A slab that baked all afternoon in an unconditioned garage stays warm well into the next morning, and warm concrete accelerates the reaction from underneath while the crew is still spreading. That is why we read the floor, not the forecast, before anything gets mixed.
Winter mornings run the other direction. A cold slab slows everything down, which sounds forgiving and is really just a different set of rules: coats take longer to reach recoat, and pushing the next pass onto material that has not gotten there yet buys trouble instead of time. The schedule flexes to the slab rather than the other way around.
What this means practically is that summer installs start early and winter installs do not get rushed to fit daylight. It also means a genuine one-day finish is not automatic on every slab in every season, and we would rather tell you that at the walk than discover it with half a floor down. If the day will not hold, we say so and plan around it.
Short Working Time Makes the Crew the Variable
Here is the tradeoff nobody advertises. The same speed that collapses a week into a day gives the installer a short window to work in, and heat and dry air both shorten it further. On a hot Andrews afternoon a batch can begin setting while it is still being spread. Mix too much at once, hesitate at a corner, lose a wet edge, and roller lines and ridges freeze into a floor that was supposed to read as one continuous sheet.
So the day gets run differently. Small batches and more of them. Enough hands that somebody is always cutting the perimeter ahead of the roller rather than chasing it. Pot life watched on every batch instead of the clock on the wall, and a half-mixed kit pitched rather than pushed onto your floor because it was almost fine.
None of that is exotic, and none of it shows up in a product brochure. It is the difference between a crew that runs this material regularly and one treating it as epoxy with a faster label. The evidence surfaces under low afternoon light coming through a bay door, which is the angle that finds every flaw a floor has.
What the Sun Does at the Threshold
The first ten or fifteen feet inside an open bay door live a harder life than the rest of the floor. That strip takes direct sun for part of every afternoon and sits in shade the remainder, and the daily swing is rougher on a coating than steady exposure would be. Epoxy used as a final layer ambers under that treatment, drifting from clear toward yellow, taking a white flake blend toward cream and a gray toward tan.
It happens gradually enough that owners rarely notice it occurring and plainly enough that they notice once it has. Polyaspartic is UV stable by formulation, so the floor you signed off on is the floor still looking back at you several summers later. That is the whole reason it goes on the threshold strip even when the rest of the build is more conventional.
Heat at the tire line is the companion problem. A truck coming off county roads in August parks with hot rubber pressed into one spot for hours, and a soft topcoat softens, grabs and lifts when the vehicle moves. That is hot-tire pickup, the failure people describe as the floor peeling in circles. A properly built polyaspartic layer holds a harder, more heat-tolerant film, which is why it is our default clear over any garage storing a daily driver rather than a project car.
When Plain Epoxy Is the Better Purchase
We will talk you out of this material when it is not earning anything. It carries a real premium over standard epoxy, and paying that premium should buy sun stability, a compressed schedule, heavier chemical resistance or hot-tire durability. If your floor needs none of those, the money does more good somewhere else, usually in prep or in additional square footage.
The clearest example is a closed home garage where the door stays down most of the day, nothing parks inside but a car that has already cooled, and nobody is in a hurry. A well-built epoxy system with a good topcoat serves that slab for years. The same goes for a storage building or a back room where the floor mainly needs to quit dusting and start cleaning easily. A shop already shut down for other work does not need the schedule advantage either, since the week is spoken for regardless.
What we recommend around Andrews far more often than either extreme is the middle build: an epoxy body coat carrying the flake and the thickness, with a polyaspartic clear on top absorbing the sun, the heat and the tires. You pay the premium on the one layer where it changes the outcome, and you keep the fast return on the last coat, which is the one holding up your reopening. Can a shop stay partly open while you work?
Often, yes. A larger floor gets broken into sections that fit whatever gaps your crews leave, with containment keeping grinding dust inside the work zone. Each section gets a marked return time so nobody has to guess by touching it. We settle those boundaries with whoever runs the building before we start.
Does the one-day schedule shorten the preparation?
No. Diamond grinding, crack and joint repair and the moisture reading take the same hours on any system, and the speed lives entirely in the coats. We would rather move your date than start on a slab that is not ready, because a fast install over rushed prep fails early and wastes the whole exercise.
Can it go over a floor that is already coated?
Sometimes, depending on what is down and how well it is bonded. We test adhesion and check moisture during the visit. Failing material comes off first, since a new coat is only ever as sound as whatever it is sticking to, and covering a bad bond just buys the same problem again.
